FEATURED WORK

ARTIST STATEMENT

Northern New Mexico and Taos in particular is my

spiritual home. I never cease to be amazed by

the light and color, diversity and beauty of the

landscape there. Whether hiking the Sangre de

Cristo Mountains in the Taos Ski Valley, walking

the open plains of Cerro or scrambling down a

steep trail to the Riio Grande Valley floor, I am

filled with a sense of wonder, renewal and

appreciation for nature.

I also return again and again to photograph

and paint the traditional adobe architecture of

the region including local churches and pueblos,

and in particular the Taos Pueblo.

What inspires me to photograph is quality of

light, a blaze of color, an arresting form, a

special presence. When my photographic journey

is successful the subject will speak to me

through spirit, beauty, harmony, mystery or

humor.

Color is a primary source of motivation in my

work for its expressive qualities and healing

properties. For me, a wash of Cerulean blue may

express clarity, revelation and spirit, while a

bold stroke of Cadmium red may communciate

sensuality, power or charged emotion.

Handpainting my black and white

photographs brings together two important and

creative outlets in my life--painting and

photography. Adding color also brings another

dimension to my work. I can create a make-believe

atmosphere based on my imagination and feelings

at the time I apply the paint. Each handpainted

photograph is unique and one of a kind. When I

paint the same image again, the colors, tones and

mood varies.

The paintings and pastel drawings featured

here are individual expressions that were

created under the glorious skies of northern New

Mexico, where I continue to find inspiration and

renewal to explore different aspects of

creativity.
